How Does Orbera® Work?

The Orbera intra-gastric balloon sits in the stomach and occupies space thus giving you the sensation of fullness with a much smaller volume of food than normal.

What is the Orbera® Balloon Made of?
The ORBERA intra-gastric balloon is a saline filled sphere made of a soft, smooth, silicone type rubber material. A portion of the balloon is radio-opaque thus will appear on X-ray imaging. It is roughly the size of a grapefruit.
Can the Orbera® Balloon leak or deflate?
Leakage or deflation of the balloon is a very rare event. Although it is possible, it is highly unlikely.
If you no longer experience sensation of fullness after a small meal you need to have your balloon interigated by a specialist.
Can the gastric balloon injure my stomach?
The Orbera balloon is made of a very soft, silicone type rubber thus is unlikely to injure the stomach.
Injury can be caused during placement and removal but after it is placed injury is unlikely.
What are the potential side effects gastric balloon?
Most patients experience nausea which may last for about 1-2weeks. Some describe it as the nausea one experiences after eating a huge meal. This is a result of the grapefruit size Orbera balloon being placed in the stomach and is a normal sensation which will usually resolve after a few days to 1week.
The balloon may also cause vomiting and dizziness. Usually these symptoms are the worst in the first few days but get better as your body adapts to the balloon.
How much weight can I lose with the Orbera® Gastric Balloon
The amount of weight that you can potentially lose with the Orbera® Gastric Balloon will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt to the lifestyle changes necessary to achieve long term success.
