Weight Loss

The Orbera intra-gastric balloon sits in the stomach and occupies space thus giving you the sensation of fullness with a much smaller volume of food than normal.

The balloon is a tool to help you develop healthy eating habits and exercise routines to achieve long term success with weight loss.

What is the Orbera® Balloon Made of?

The ORBERA intra-gastric balloon is a saline filled sphere made of a soft, smooth, silicone type rubber material. A portion of the balloon is radio-opaque thus will appear on X-ray imaging. It is roughly the size of a grapefruit.

Can the Orbera® Balloon leak or deflate?

Leakage or deflation of the balloon is a very rare event. Although it is possible, it is highly unlikely.

If you no longer experience sensation of fullness after a small meal you need to have your balloon interigated by a specialist.

Can the gastric balloon injure my stomach?

The Orbera balloon is made of a very soft, silicone type rubber thus is unlikely to injure the stomach.

Injury can be caused during placement and removal but after it is placed injury is unlikely.

What are the potential side effects gastric balloon?

Most patients experience nausea which  may last for about 1-2weeks. Some describe it as the nausea one experiences after eating a huge meal. This is a result of the grapefruit size Orbera balloon being placed in the stomach and is a normal sensation which will usually resolve after a few days to 1week.

The balloon may also cause vomiting and dizziness. Usually these symptoms are the worst in the first few days but get better as your body adapts to the balloon.

How much weight can I lose with the Orbera® Gastric Balloon

The amount of weight that you can potentially lose with the Orbera® Gastric Balloon will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt to the lifestyle changes necessary to achieve long term success. It is important to understand that as with all bariatric and weight loss options the Orbera® balloon is merely a tool to aid weight loss and must be used in conjunction with diet, exercise, and a behavior modification program.

The Orbera® clinical study has shown that weight loss varies from person to person. On average, patients lost 3.1x2 the weight of those that were on a diet and exercise program alone. In the US clinical study patients lost an average of 21.8 lbs.*

Do I qualify for the Orbera® Gastric Balloon?

To qualify for Orbera®Gastric Balloon you must be over the age of 18yo, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40, and must be willing to participate in a medically supervised weight loss program.

What makes Orbera different from other weight loss options?

Orbera® vs Diet and Exercise Alone

Studies show that the average person loses 3.1x more weight with Orbera®than with diet and exercise alone. Here’s some of the reasons why:

  • Diets can leave you feeling hungry or dissatisfied. Orbera® helps by taking up room in the stomach and encouraging portion control.
  • When you’re overweight, exercise can be challenging and uncomfortable. With Orbera® aiding your weight loss, physical activity can be more comfortable.

Orbera® vs Other Gastric Balloons

Over the past 20 years, Orbera® has become the #1 weight loss balloon in the world and is the only balloon recognized by the ASGE for its safety and effectiveness*. No other FDA-approved gastric balloon has shown more weight loss during their US clinical studies.

Orbera® vs Surgery

The gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure, which means no incisions, stitches, or scars. It takes about 20 minutes; most people go home the same day. Importantly, the balloon only temporary, as opposed to most surgical options which means it is reversible!
